People, who are likely to somatize, have the following characteristics. They tend to be very anxious and rigid in their thinking. Losses related to relationships or jobs can upset them extremely. They do not take failures easily and they blame others for them. The good thing about this group is that they are very observant about their bodies. Also, they usually have a good medical background as they tend to know the signs and symptoms of diseases very well.

Types of Somatization

There are different types of somatization. Each type has its defining features which need not be similar in all patients suffering from it. The following are the different types of somatization- pain-related, gastrointestinal, sexual/genital, pseudoneurological, neurological, and psychological.

1. Aphasia (inability of speaking)

A person with a great memory is found to complain about this disorder, due to the damage caused in the Broca’s area (responsible for speech). The patient has very little chance of recovery if he/she complains about it.
